Last week in...PreKLast week, as we are coming close to the end of Sunday School, we revisited the topic of friendship. We discussed the new friends we made this year and how we can be a friend to all. We learned ways to include all children into our play/friendship especially those who seem to be left out or alone.
Ask your child: Who is one friend you made this year in Sunday School? How can you be a friend to others?
KindergartenStudents will understand what Havdallah is (separation) and why it is celebrated. Students will also learn Havdallah prayers and songs.
Ask your child: What is Havdallah? When is it celebrated?
1st GradeLast week we learned about tikum olam, the mitzvah of repairing our world. In connection with Earth Day the students learned about how we have a responsibility to take care of our planet and each other. We brainstormed ways in which we can do our part everyday and not just on April 22nd every year.
Ask your child: What is one way we can repair the world? What is tikum olam?
2nd GradeLast week, we revisited our celebration of the Independence of Israel. We learned that it is not only the homeland for Jews all over the world, but it is an exciting country of immigrants and Sabras (natives) who eat unique foods, read Hebrew ("backwards") and have many important cities to see. We also learned the cities on the map of Israel, sang Hatikvah, waved the Israeli flag, and danced the horah!
Ask your child: What are 2 cities in Israel?(Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Eilat) What does the flag of Israel look like? (white with 2 blue stripes and the Star of David in the center)
3rd GradeLast week we reviewed all of the amazing things we learned about Israel, the holidays that celebrate Israel's soldiers and independence, and the fun we had at Israel Fest! Then we went to art with Morah Laura and created some beautiful tin foil art to celebrate Israel!
4th GradeLast week we had our special guest star, shinshinit Na'ama! Na'ama brought us a super cool project based on the art of Hanoch Piven. We learned about Hanoch Piven, his style of art, and then made our own creations!
5th GradeLast week, we learn how the flag of Israel was born; why it is blue and white and striped. Kids drew the story and then created their own flag for Israel's 75th birthday and explain "Why".
Ask your child: 1/ Who was Herzl and why he is so important to the Jewish history? 2/ How does you see Israel?
We also spent Sunday talking about the first sentence of yesterday's Torah portion: "You shall be Holy, for I the Lord your God am Holy." We discussed what the word "holy" means and explored synonyms of the word. Lastly we talked about why we stand on tip toes during the prayer, when we say Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh... (we're reaching for holiness).
Ask your child: What synonym for holy did you like? What other synonyms for holy can you come up with?
6th, 7th, & 8th GradeThis week we had the honor of welcoming an educator of the Kennesaw State University Museum of History and Holocaust Education. She ran a fabulous program for our 6th graders (who were joined by the 7th and 8th graders). Focused on primary source documents, the students discussed and reviewed the Nuremberg laws, Kristallnacht, and the Final Solution.
