PreK
We spent the day learning all about Shavuot. We did a special Shavuot art project with Morah Laura. We also had Krav Maga with Mr. Joe and Tefillah with Rabbi Max.
Ask your child: What is Shavuot? What special foods do we eat on Shavuot?
Kindergarten
Students learned about Shavuot. They created edible Torahs to symbolize the importance of the holiday since that is when we received the Torah on Mount Sinai.
Ask your child: What is the significance of Shavuot? What kind of food do Jewish people eat on this holiday?
1st Grade
Last week we learned about tikum olam, the mitzvah of repairing our world. In connection with Earth Day, the students learned about how we have a responsibility to take care of our planet and each other. This week we focused on two special events: 1. Making cards for Naama (It’s her last day at Temple Emanuel) 2. Learning about Shavuot The students learned when Shavuot is celebrated and why it is important.
Ask your child: When is Shavuot? Why do we celebrate it?
2nd Grade
Our lesson gave our children the story behind God's giving the 10 commandments to the Jewish people. We discussed the meaning of each of these commandments and played a game to challenge our learners. We also learned more about Shavuot, and how we celebrate it with prayer, stories, and special foods.
Ask your child: Can you tell me about one of the 10 Commandments that you follow and one you might not, sometimes? What are some of the ways Jews celebrate Shavuot? ( study the Torah, decorate with flowers, eat dairy foods (like blintzes).
3rd Grade
Last week, we read the story Joseph and His Brothers. To go along with the story, the students watched a video. As we watched together, the students filled the thought bubbles with what they believed the characters were thinking of. Then, the class discussed what it taught us about jealousy. But the highlight of the lesson was when each student was given a cutout of a coat and asked to draw on it with different colors. Next to each color the students used, they wrote what they were thankful for that is associated with that color.
Ask your child: 1. What does the story of Joseph and His Brothers teach us about the causes and consequences of jealousy? 2. How can we avoid acting out of jealousy?
We also reviewed the Jewish Hero of Moses! We talked about what made him a hero and how he lived his life. We also discussed how we can be like Moses in our daily lives!
Ask your child: Q1) What made Moses nervous to speak publicly? Q2) What role did Aaron play in Moses' life?
4th Grade
Last week we studied the final big three holidays. We explored them from biblical to modern times. We also explored how they can be adapted to our everyday lives. Ask your child: What are our last 3 holidays and what are the main symbols for each?
5th Grade
On Sunday, we talked and reminisced about our days at Emanu-El this year. We reflected with gratitude about all the Midot, Holidays, and special activities we had. We created art based on these reflections.
Ask your child: What is your favorite midot, celebration, or special activity from this year?
Last week, we studied in the Talmud the story of a non-Jew coming to Rabbi Hillel and Rabbi Shammai asking them to teach him what it says in the Torah while he stands on one foot. Each student was asked to create their own sentence or two to teach someone what is in the Torah while that person is standing on one foot. Ask your child: What did you use as your sentence to teach someone about the Torah while he/she was standing on one foot? / What one or two things about the Torah have you learned this year?
6th Grade
Last Sunday, we had our final visit for Shinshinit, Naama! She talked to the kids all about the IDF (Israeli Defense Force), what her role will be when she heads home, the many different kinds of jobs within the IDF, and how the IDF protects people inside and outside of Israel.
After Naama's lesson, we went down to the patio to celebrate the upcoming holiday of Lag b'Omer (which begins tomorrow night!). Since Lag b'Omer is typically celebrated by having a big bonfire, we enjoyed a bonfire and s'mores making (and eating of course).
7th, & 8th Grade
Ms. Beth talked to our 7th and 8th graders all about what next year will look like for them. Be on the lookout for a letter from Beth, Rabbi Spike, and/or Rabbi Max regarding your child's next step in their Sunday School journey. BIG things to come!
