This week in... Kindergarten This week we learned about Cantor. We compared the differences and similarities between a Rabbi and Cantor. We also got to do portraits of Cantor Lauren. She even came in to talk to us about what she does in the temple! Ask your child:1. What is one difference between a Rabbi and Cantor? 2. Name one duty of a Cantor.
st Grade Today we discussed Bikkur Holim. We read Lets Discover Mitzvot magazine all about caring for the sick and elderly. We discussed how to visit the sick and make them feel better. We made a poem about visiting the sick. We made a card and decorated a get well bag. We also visited with our shinshin, Nicole. Ask your child: How do you make the sick feel better? What can you bring the sick?
nd Grade We used multisensory activities to teach today's lesson: The Pharoah of Egypt feared the growing numbers of Hebrews could rise up, and ordered all male babies be drowned. Moses was saved and raised as a Prince of Egypt. God recognized that he had compassion for the suffering of the Hebrew slaves. God chose Moses to speak for him to soften Pharoah's heart and deliver the children of Israel to the Land of Milk and Honey! Ask your child: What did Moses' mother and sister do to save him as a baby? Why did God speak to Moses in the burning bush?
rd Grade Judaics We visited Morah Laura in art and started our newest project. Ask your child: What's the new art project? Applied Hebrew We began class by reading the story "A Visit to Heaven and Hell." Our discussion focused on the choices made by the main character in the story, a Rabbi. Throughout the story, the Rabbi visits both Heaven and Hell, and in the end gets to choose where he would like to stay. The students described the Rabbi's personality as kind and thoughtful. We tied the Rabbi's story to our main topic, which was the story of Rebekah at the Well from Genesis 24. After reading the story, the students were asked to think of one kind act they had recently performed. The kids were then given construction paper and were able to bring their act of kindness to life. The kids all shared their creations with each other and we had so much fun reading about everyone’s kind actions! Ask your child: 1. What made heaven into heaven? 2. Why did the Rabbi choose to go to Hell?
th Grade Judaics We discussed the 'role' of the Jewish people as being 'chosen'. How the Torah was offered to other peoples and they refused it due to the laws and consequences. How the laws in Torah are the basis for our civilian laws. We discussed the most important characteristics of being an effective leader. Ask your child: What are the Jews as the 'Chosen People' chosen to do? What are the 2 most important characteristics of a leader? Applied Hebrew Today we learned about the blessings of Jacob to his children. These blessings will end up being the 12 tribes, including the 2 children of Joseph that were getting the blessings from their grandfather. Ask your child: What are the ways of saying thank you for people in our life? When do we say thank you and why?
th Grade Judaics This week we came back to Religious School! We reviewed the story of Genesis that we learned so far (but might have forgotten) and talked about the family tree of Abraham. We discussed Parshah Vayeitzei (Gen 28:10-32:3) and the Labors of Jacob, and how even if we get away with bad behavior, it usually comes back to haunt us later on. Ask your child: Q1) How did Laban trick Jacob into working for him for 14 years? Q2) Do you feel bad for Jacob? Why or why not? Applied Hebrew We can't wait to meet again with our Shinshinit Nicole. Nicole will talk with the kids about life in Israel as a young adult with special activities exploring the beauty of Israel. Ask your child: 1/Wwhat did you learn about Israel? 2/ Have you found similarity between Israeli and American kids?
th Grade It was such a pleasure to be back with the kids this Sunday! Our primary focus today was: Israeli Cities! They didn’t come into class quite knowing where a lot of the cities were, but they left with a much better idea! I’ve attached a fill-in-the-blank map if you’d like to review it with them sometime this week. Ask your child about how THEY became the map of Israel!
th & 8th Grades The 7th and 8th grade classes combined this week for the first time of the semester. As a group, we discussed an article from the Washington Post about an Emory college student’s decision to wear a kippah. We also prepared for our discussion of the Shoah by reading stories of childhood survivors of the Holocaust.
