A Clean New Year

This past year has been like Groundhog Day, and we’re all Bill Murray reliving the same 24 hours over and again. I hope this Rosh HaShanah will be the beginning of a new day. The prayers of the High Holy Days call upon us to reflect on our past actions so that we can leave our mistakes where they belong, behind us, and only carry what we want to continue into the new year.

This Shabbat, October 5th, at 11:00 am, we’re going to Morgan Falls Park to take this mental work of repentance and turn it into something physical. We will cast our mistakes into the “sea,” and we will also clean out our mistakes from the water too. Join me for our river clean-up as we take out the litter from the shoreline of Morgan Falls Park.

Cleaning up our waterways is just one of many important actions we can take to do the work of repentance for polluting our environment. After we clean up, we’ll enjoy a beautiful day at the park with our Temple Emanu-El community. We’ll have a pavilion with chairs and tables, so bring a picnic and start the new year with some fresh air.

This Rosh HaShanah, may we find forgiveness for our mistakes through prayer, righteous giving, and making amends with our friends and family.

Wishing you a shana tovah u’metukah, a good and sweet new year.
