Where do you find meaning?

Rabbi Max Miller

Where we find meaning might be different from where we find joy. We may be happy when we watch football on TV, but I doubt we derive any existential purpose by yelling at the TV. The real question is, “What gives your life purpose?” Maybe we feel a sense of purpose when we feel useful, caring, or serving others. Maybe we find meaning when we gather with our community. Or, perhaps, we find meaning when we care for ourselves. The new year is a perfect time to assess what is or isn’t giving your life purpose. This is the time to reevaluate our priorities, not to bring greater joy into our days, but to provide our lives with more meaning.

One area I encourage everyone to delve into is Jewish learning. Take the opportunity this year to dive into what it means to be a Jew. Learn about our heritage and history. Ask the big questions they lead you on paths of discovery. Take a moment while you’re reading this to check out the classes your rabbis are teaching this year. Almost every Sunday throughout the school year, your rabbis are teaching adult education from 11:15–12:15. We will go into areas of Judaism you’ve always wondered about and ones you’ve never considered before. We teach these classes to help folks find greater meaning in their lives and to uncover what gives them purpose.

Take a look. Put a class on your calendar. And we’ll see you on Sundays!
