In the next few days Marita & I depart for Israel. For a bit more than a week, we are going to be volunteering our unskilled manual labor doing a variety of things, ranging from picking vegetables and tree-fruit, to wrapping bandages in the hospitals. We do this because the folks who normally would be harvesting and wrapping are on the front lines with the IDF (or have gone back to Thailand). We will be meeting with various families of Jewish captives still in Gaza, as well as soldiers, and survivors of the October attacks by Hamas. We hope to ‘bear witness’, hear their stories, and bring them back to you...
Are you a new, new-ish or even a "seasoned" member of TE, and not already a member of a Chavurah? If so, this is a fantastic time to be a part of our revitalized Chavurah program! A Chavurah is a group of around 6-12 individuals, couples, and/or families who have some common interests. It is a great opportunity to develop closer friendships with a smaller group of TE members.

Get your "BRING THEM HOME" bracelets at services and in the TE office!
Bring them home now! More than two months into this war and, at the time of this writing, there are still 130+ hostages being held in Gaza. We will not forget about the sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers who are enduring unimaginable conditions.
We created these bracelets as a constant reminder of two important messages we carry with us these days. First, that the people of Israel will live, Am Yisrael Chai. Second, that our family has been taken from us and we will not forget them.
We hope you’ll wear these bracelets until every hostages returns home.
We will not be silent. We will not forget.
Am Yisrael Chai
You can pick up one of these bracelets on Friday, Dec. 22 and 29 after Shabbat services.
Do you know about the Daffodil Project? We have a new fund at Temple Emanu-El to support this program.
As part of its mission, the Daffodil Project aspires to plant 1.5 million Daffodils worldwide in remembrance of the children that were killed during the Holocaust, and in support for children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today. We are proud that our synagogue’s initiative to combat antisemitism has adopted this annual project and brought it to six area schools this fall.
We also plant daffodils at Temple Emanu-El every year. To be able to fund this project now and in the future, "The Daffodil Project Fund" has been established.
Please consider making donations to this fund so we can continue to educate people about the genocide of the Holocaust and spread the messages of tolerance and hope. During this difficult time for Israel and the Jewish people, educating and building bridges within our schools is more important than ever.
In the wake of the brutal and devastating attack by Hamas on October 7 and the unfolding war in Israel, we are introducing a special series from the For Heaven's Sake podcast with Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi, For Heaven's Sake: Israel at War.
Israel at War – The Northern Front
Grappling with the threat of Hezbollah
With missiles being fired at Israel daily from Lebanon, Israelis are grappling with how to respond to the threat of Hezbollah in the North. Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi discuss the threat of Hezbollah, the possibility and risks of fighting a war on a second front, and the extent and limits of Israeli power.
Discussing the tragic deaths of three Israeli hostages
On Friday, December 15 the IDF shot and killed three Israeli hostages in Gaza while they were raising their arms in surrender and waving white flags. The soldiers misidentified these Israelis as terrorists. Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi express their sadness and heartbreak as they consider how this grave incident underscores the internal debate about saving the hostages or winning the war. They also examine what this tragic error says about IDF tactics as well as the combat strategy and terror ploys the IDF are facing.

We have come to banish the darkness! These are the opening lyrics to a classic children’s song in Israel. In Israel, “Ba’nu Choshech L’garesh” (the Hebrew title) is a classic Chanukah song as ubiquitous as “I Have a Little Dreidel” in the United States. To match the words, when little kids perform this song throughout Israel, they all hold individual candles or flashlights. The lyrics go:
We have come to banish the darkness. In our hands are light and fire. Everyone is a small light. But together, we are tremendously bright. Flee, darkness! Be gone, night! Flee before the Light!

Israel at War – Gazan Civilians
How can we think about civilian casualties in the context of a just war?
As we enter the ninth week and a new, post-ceasefire phase of the Israel-Hamas War, the gap between Israeli and North American Jewish perspectives continues to widen. While Israelis count and mourn each Israeli casualty, North American Jews are increasingly demanding greater consideration for civilian casualties in Gaza as well as the humanitarian crisis there. In this episode, Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi discuss the experiences shaping these divergent perspectives and how Israelis might approach concern over civilian life and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as they fight for the existence of Israel.

As the sun sets this evening, Jews around the world will light the first candle for Chanukah.
I write this note to our Temple Emanu-El community, knowing that these days are brutally hard for us as Jews.
Our tradition asks us to place our lit menorahs in the front windows of our homes, as a matter of Jewish identity, faith, and pride. But the Talmud acknowledges that in times when it is dangerous to do so, we are permitted to place our menorahs elsewhere in the house; however, we are still commanded to light them.

The war between Israel and Hamas has caused many of our eyes to open up to facts about our American society that are so painful to us because they are hateful.
The Israeli captives exchanged for convicted Palestinian terrorists (in a 1:3 ratio) cause us to give profound thanks, while at the same time makes us remember the vast majority of those who are still in Gaza (if they are alive at all).
Many of us are politically more engaged now than we have ever been in our lives as we realize that Israel’s well-being has now risen to the top of our priority list for any upcoming election. The Jewish future, as the Israelis claim, is in a state of existential crisis.

After the rally on Tuesday, it is as clear as ever that our community is stronger when we come together. Another gathering of 290,000 Jews is not likely to happen anytime soon, but we can find strength even (maybe especially) when we gather in small groups, too. For decades, we’ve called these small groups a Chavurah. At Temple Emanu-El, that means a group of congregants in the same stage of life who come together for all sorts of occasions—most importantly, to create a place where everyone can feel pride in their Jewish identity. We’ve learned that we can replicate that warmth, pride, and love of Judaism when other Jewish families and friends are there for us.
Click here for more information and fill out a short questionnaire to help the Chavurah Committee place you with a group. The committee will help get you started and will provide any assistance that you need to make your Chavurah successful!
If you have any questions, please contact Lori Goldberg at lsideman@hotmail.com .

The application for Jewish overnight camp scholarships is now available. The window to apply for scholarships extends fromNovember 9th through November 21st.
Attending a Jewish overnight camp is one of the most impactful experiences a child or teen can have to create lasting, positive Jewish experiences that build proud Jewish adults. Temple Emanu-El believes that families who make Judaism an active part of their daily lives will build strong Jewish identities for adults and children. Our families are already committed to Jewish education through day schools or attending the Diamond Family Religious School, but this only covers nine months of the year--this is why Jewish overnight camp is so important!
We know that giving your child(ren) the experience of a Jewish overnight camp represents a significant financial investment. Thankfully, Temple Emanu-El has generous donors who enable us to provide need-based scholarships to lessen the cost of camp tuition. Click here to apply.

There are two mitzvot pertaining to the Shabbat meal. One is oneg, the mitzvah to delight in Shabbat, as it is written: “Call Shabbat ‘delight’ (oneg)” (Isaiah 58:13). Oneg is fulfilled primarily through the meals, but snacks and a Shabbat nap are parts of it as well." (Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 7:2:2) Providing the Oneg is performing a Mitzvah for our community.

This week, we marked the end of the Shloshim period of mourning, 30 days after the unfathomable atrocities that occurred in Israel on October 7th. At the same time, this is the week we read the Torah portion which includes Abraham’s burial of Sarah. Abraham, a stranger who journeyed to Canaan from far away, wants to bury his wife in the ancient city of Hebron. The Hittites, who were then in the land, would have happily given Abraham a burial place free of charge—a generous offer, but one that could be rescinded as it was a gift and not a business deal. Instead, Abraham insists on purchasing a burial plot in a cave in the field of Machpelah facing the city of Hebron.

Also, this link will contact your members of Congress and urge them to keep pressure on Hamas to bring the hostages home: Click here .

When I was a student at the University of Maryland (’11), I distinctly remember feeling safe being a Jew on campus. My AEPi house and the Hillel never faced antisemitic graffiti, I never had an issue getting an excused absence for Jewish holidays, and our annual Israel festival was proudly celebrated on the largest campus quad in the country, McKeldin Mall. Being outwardly Jewish at the University of Maryland was an easy, positive, and even unremarkable experience...

This week’s Torah portion, Lech Lecha, famously begins with God calling out to Abraham & Sarah to move themselves forward, and simultaneously to journey inward, towards the land that they had not yet seen…but would eventually be shown. Israel.
The journey from Haran (Syria) to Canaan (Israel) for this Jewish family was not quick, or straight, or easy. Even after they arrived, there were times that they were forced to leave due to famine and had to sojourn down to Egypt (foreshadowing the Joseph narrative).
We write because of the continuing tragic and horrific situation in Israel, antisemitism, and our concern for security in our community and at Temple Emanu-El. This week’s Torah portion is ‘Noah’ from the book of Genesis.
The Torah tells us that God’s reason for drowning the world was that it was full of ‘hamas’, which translates into senseless violence.
Now, the fact that the terrorist organization Hamas is an Arabic acronym for something, and totally separate from the Hebrew word, does not take away from a dazzling coincidence that is very much on our minds as the war between Israel and Hamas rages.
We write because of the continuing tragic and horrific situation in Israel, antisemitism, and our concern for security in our community and at Temple Emanu-El. Thank you all for joining the Fall Walk on this chilly October day from the Avalon to Alpharetta on the Alpha Loop! Just over a week ago, the barbaric Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel shocked us all. The anger and sorrow are still raw, but we are all pulling together to cope with what comes next.
We also want to remind you that ADL is on full alert, leveraging our capabilities and leaning into our expertise to understanding how antisemitism emerges from crises like this.
Temple Emanu-El expresses our condolences
Temple Emanu-El expresses our condolences, outrage, and solidarity with our local Muslim friends from the Istanbul Cultural Center, with whom we have had a relationship for years. We received a similar letter from them the day after the Hamas attack in Israel (last week).Hate has no place here.

ISRAEL AT WAR - MORAL RED LINES As we enter week two of war in Israel, Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi struggle with the question of moral red lines when responding to absolute evil. If there are moral red lines, how do we define them while grappling with who we want to be and not just who we are at this moment? LISTEN >
ISRAEL AT WAR - DAY 5 - EVIL As Israel’s new reality of unfathomable horror set in, many took comfort in U.S. President Biden's speech calling the Hamas attack “pure evil.” Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi explore the difficult question of what happens when the behavior of others descends from wrongful to outright evil, and how we can cope with it. LISTEN >
ISRAEL AT WAR - DAY 3 - HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? Following Israel's unprecedented, ruthless, and devastating attack by Hamas, Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi discuss their emotional response of sadness and outrage, and reflect on the burning question of how this attack happened and the IDF's delayed response. Since the Hamas attacks this past Shabbat, I find that most of each day I feel like I am underwater. Waves of emotions ranging from sadness to confusion to anger wash through me, leaving me each time on an empty shore of anguish and grief. My sleep is interrupted by thoughts and images from Israel. Colors are muted. I feel no joy.
Like many of us, I am in mourning.
Tonight, our Sanctuary will serve as a House of Mourning. We will be together, as is Jewish tradition, to mourn, and not alone.
We write because of the continuing tragic and horrific situation in Israel, antisemitism, and our concern for security in our community and at Temple Emanu-El. We want to underscore and reassure you that Temple Emanuel-El has taken and maintains a range of significant security measures, seen and unseen, designed to guard and protect our congregants, their families, and guests while at our synagogue.
Operation Isaiah, Temple Emanu-El's annual canned goods and coat collection until October 15.
Join us in our effort to feed the hungry and clothe those who are cold. This year, we are collecting new and gently used books for children ages birth to 10 years-old. For your convenience, collection barrels will be labeled and located at Davis Lower School and in the temple lobby. We will also have barrels in the Administrative Entry Way.
Start the new year off right by doing a mitzvah! Your generosity goes a long way toward helping the most vulnerable.

Sukkot is a holiday with many mitzvot, shaking the lulav and etrog and building a sukkah are easily the most prominent. Yet, my favorite mitzvah on Sukkot is the commandment to be joyful. Yes, on Sukkot, we are commanded to be joyful! However, this joy is not like Chanukah, Purim, or Pesach. Typically, Jewish holidays that emphasize joy also emphasize drinking, but not so in the case of Sukkot. Our sages teach us that Sukkot is different. Our joy on Sukkot should not come from wine or any kind of alcohol. Instead, our joy should come from service to God. One interpretation of how we serve God best on Sukkot is to welcome guests into our Sukkah. At Temple Emanu-El, we take this commandment to welcome guests seriously.

We are now in the midst of the yamin noraim / the Days of Awe, those ten days that begin with Rosh HaShanah and end with Yom Kippur.
Our Sages describe Yom Kippur as a ‘doorway’, an existential threshold from which we can pause, look back, gaze forward, and fortify ourselves for what is to come.
Judaism has always held doorways as places of vulnerability because they are liminal, the space between here and there. This is why Jews in ancient Babylonia buried bowls of water underneath their doorways, and Jews of ancient Egypt put lamb’s blood above their gates, to keep their spiritual thresholds strong, and misfortune from entering their homes. Brotherhood Braves 2023
Hello Gentelmen,
Just want to say thanks for fighting traffic and joining the TE guys at the game last night. What a game it was!!! Together we saw the best team in baseball, our playoff bound Braves in post-season style atmosphere, with a first-of-its-kind record broken by our probably-alomost-certainly-future-MVP of MLB, come from behind with a walk-off win in 10 innings! It was a thrilling experience to share together.
A BIG shout out to Lee Frohman for coordinating with the Braves, managing the finances, and transferring all the tickets! Thanks Lee.
Our next event is Brotherhood Booze & Ball Backyard Social on October 19th at Jeff Pollock's home in Dunwoody. It’s FREE! Sign up here.

Tomorrow night begins Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year, and the start of our High Holidays. The year will be 5784, which means that we Jews have been here for a VERY long time.
Whether you believe it or not, we have been telling ourselves that God has tapped us to be God’s partner, in order to take the world from where it is, to where it ought to be from darkness to light, from brokenness to wholeness, from injustice to justice. This is known as tikkun olam, and it is part of the Jewish raison d’etra. Read more here

Let's welcome our new Shinshinit, Naama!
Our Temple Emanu-El and Diamond Family Religious School Community are thrilled to welcome our newest Shinshinit, Naama Brody! Having a Shinshin as a part of our Diamond Family Religious School and youth programming has been an amazing way to bring Israel into the lives of the next generation. Naama is taking a gap year between high school and her IDF service to come to Atlanta to serve the Jewish community. Jewish peoplehood is a pillar of Temple Emanu-El; Naama will not only teach us about Israel, but we will also share with her all about what it means to be a part of a Reform Jewish community in America. Week by week we will strengthen the connection between the Jewish people of Atlanta to Israel and around the world.
Naama grew up in Givat Shmuel with her mom, dad, brother, two sisters, and her dog Tommy. She has never been to the US before! She is excited about meeting new people and visiting new places she has never been to and she's excited about working with different kinds of people and teaching them more about Israel. Her hobbies include Baking / Cooking, Dancing / Singing, Fashion, Listening to Music, Playing Instruments, Social Media, Travel, and Watching Movies / TV.
We hope her name is easy for you to remember, as our Shinshinit last year was also named Naama!
To learn a little more, check out her brief video HERE .

Ok! I’m going to invite you to something incredibly cool, and meaningful, that we are trying out here at Temple Emanu-El.
Saturday night, September 9th, we are going to have our S’lichot service outside, under the stars. S’lichot is what I call ‘the soft opening’ for the High Holidays and is meant to put us in a certain headspace a few days before Rosh HaShanah.
Your rabbis have spent considerable time finding poetry from contemporary poets to weave between the beautiful traditional prayers that are sung as we prepare for the High Holidays. Read more here

Fabulous Jewish Education with the Classrooms to Match!
The Diamond Family Religious School is welcoming two big updates!
First, thanks to the generosity of our members at the Spring Forward event in April, construction is actively taking place to upgrade many of our religious school classrooms with fresh paint, ceiling tiles, floors, rugs, cabinetry, and shades. Our classroom aesthetic will finally match the level of learning that has been taking place in our Religious School wing.
Second, we have made a big shift in our 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade curriculums to reflect our values as a congregation.
Temple Emanu-El prides itself on being a Reform Zionist congregation. This means we value the following:
A safe and secure Jewish and democratic state in the Land of Israel.
Join your TE community and volunteer in the thrift store or food pantry to help feed and clothe individuals in need in our community.

Hosting an Oneg is not only a Mitzvah, but it can also be a way to celebrate a family event and share the good news with the congregation.

When we first welcomed our two hives of honeybees in the spring, our mantra was that this was a learning experience first, and if we got some honey, it would be purely a bonus. Months of hard work from our Bee Team and the honeybees themselves have yielded three frames of honey (about 15 lbs.). Metaphors between Judaism and honeybees are endless but very poignant in this case. Enjoying the honey of our labors is truly a celebration. After these High Holy Days, we will celebrate our first harvest to start the new year off with true Temple Emanu-El sweetness.

As the good book says, “As iron sharpens iron, so too does one friend sharpen the wit of another.” * Yes, they were probably talking about some lofty vision of friendship and studying Torah, but this verse about irons can be interpreted in another “lofty” way. When friends play golf together, they push one another to be better—one player’s irons sharpen the skill of their friend. Together, their friendship emerges improved.

Last week, I joined more than 1,000 Jewish community leaders for an emergency briefing hosted by the Union for Reform Judaism following the Knesset’s passage of the “reasonableness” bill.
Among the presenters was Rabbi Gilad Kariv, a current Knesset member from the Labor Party – the first Reform rabbi to serve in Knesset – and a trusted voice on core issues that matter to the Reform Jewish community.
Kariv didn’t mince words and passionately urged us to stand resolutely with Israelis protesting the judicial overhaul.
Then he was asked a question that many American rabbis have fielded from congregants, and has recently appeared in various op-ed pieces: Should America condition foreign aid to Israel?

The last seven months in Israel have been the most consequential time period in the history of the modern state since the Six-Day War and its aftermath. After five elections in five years, the governing coalition in Israel has successfully passed the first of a slate of legislation that will radically reshape the balance of power and the system of checks and balances in Israel. Fortunately, during that time, Rabbi Spike had the honor of shepherding 27 Confirmation students for the inaugural Schiffer Family Teen Israel Trip. These teens were privileged to witness the beauty and complexity of Israel. Simultaneously, Rabbi Rachael is one member of an exclusive list of representatives for the entire Reform movement to the World Zionist Congress, an international organization that predates even the State of Israel itself.

Today is the 9th day of the Hebrew month called Av (Tisha B’Av) and has been deemed a day of mourning since the 2nd Temple fell in 70 C.E.
The ‘fall of The Temple’ is an idiom, and emblematic, of the fall of the Jewish country (in the war with Rome). It’s like saying ‘the fall of the White House’ to express the total collapse of America.
Since that time, our rabbis have claimed that this inauspicious day (today) is the date when all the great tragedies of our people have occurred, ranging from the Golden Calf to the Spanish Inquisition. I don’t think that they actually thought that these all occurred on the same day of the year in history, but rather, that this one day of mourning was meant to symbolically capture all the tragedy of the Jewish people.

When a family raising Jewish children welcomes a new child into their home we often greet the news with a hearty: “Mazal Tov!”
Hence, the inspiration for the name of a program we soft-launched this past Spring called Mazal Tots – Temple Emanu-El’s very own Baby and Me class. In the 2023–2024 school year, we are ready for a full launch with THREE cohorts to choose from.
Mazal Tots is unique. It is a program designed to foster connections, provide resources, and celebrate the beautiful journey of parenthood. With dedicated age-specific sections, we cater to the needs of families with:

Introducing Mi Alma
Temple Emanu-El is committed to supporting families through all seasons of life.
We’re pleased to announce we have partnered with Mi Alma (Spanish/Ladino for “My Soul”), a resource designed to support families during life’s hardest moments. When a loved one passes away, Mi Alma provides an online community of support.
Mi Alma gives everyone in the community a single place to share pictures, stories, and memories in perpetuity. Through a support registry, supporters have the option to provide funds via a giving fund, meals for the family, volunteer their time, or donate in honor of the deceased.
Our goal is to connect families with the compassion and resources they need. Everyone wants to help, and Mi Alma makes it simple for those inclined to take action.
You’ll soon notice Mi Alma links in future Condolence Notice emails.

Marita and I spent our honeymoon (20 short, wonderful years ago) in Belize. At the time, we were both avid scuba divers, and our time was mostly spent diving in wrecks and reefs along the Caribbean Sea. It was incredible, with colors and sea life and movement that one can only experience underwater.
However, two decades later, there was only one dive that I specifically remember. And I think about this dive often, mostly in the context of prayer.

Caring Committee is in Need of a Substitute Caller Coordinator
The Caring Committee has a daily caller from Monday through Friday. They call congregants in their time of joy or times of need. Occasionally a caller may not be able to make their calls and we have a list of volunteer substitute callers. We need someone to coordinate the substitute caller when one is needed. Please become part of the Caring Committee family to do this. Ann Fine and I can go into details with you. Please contact one of us. Thanks.

Hosting an Oneg is not only a Mitzvah, but it can also be a way to celebrate a family event and share the good news with the congregation.

While it’s summer plenty of folks are traveling to the mountains, beaches, and bucket list destinations, but traveling to Israel is unlike any journey you will take. You can find beaches, mountains, and good food around the world, but traveling to Israel is a transformative experience.
When the Confirmation class returned from their trip, I heard only how much the ten days spent together were the most memorable of their lives. They’re not alone. When we travel to Israel together as a TE family, we create bonds and memories that strengthen our Jewish identities when we return. That is why we believe that travel to Israel is a pillar of Temple Emanu-El’s success...

Before leaving for Israel with 27 of our Temple Emanu-El teens (TE’s inaugural, post-Confirmation class, Schiffer Teen Israel trip), more than a few people good-naturedly questioned my sanity.
“Are you sure that you want to do this?” they would ask. And when I assured them that I did, they would (half-seriously) follow up with a very frank, “Why”?
The short answer is that I am absolutely sure that the single best thing to deepen, cement, and connect to a tremendously positive Jewish identity is this type of trip. It is the type of experience that begins to define who a person is at their core.

Your Temple Emanu-El Antisemitism committee thought it important for you to see both Brendan Murphy’s, and Archbishop Hartmayer’s, words of Catholic support for the Jewish community following last weekend’s antisemitic demonstrations.
My Dear Friends:
The Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Atlanta extend to you our thoughts and prayers in the wake of this latest wave of antisemitism.
Click here to read Archbishop Hartmayer's statement issued today. Shalom! - Fr. Paul Burke
A response from Brendan Murphy, Educator at the Marist School and our partner in education on antisemitism
Dear Father Burke and Archbishop Hartmayer,
As a Catholic I find encouragement in our leadership’s prompt and clear response. Unsurprising to anyone on this email list I believe education is one of the most effective ways of combating antisemitism. To that end I want to thank you again for your support and endorsement of my wish to tell the story throughout the Archdiocese of Atlanta of “Synagoga and Ecclesia in Our Time,” the extraordinary statue installed on our campus at Marist School. A reflection of decades of tireless work done by Jewish and Catholic leaders throughout the world, one cannot appreciate the honest hope the work inspires without understanding the long and tragic history of antisemitism. Since our meeting with the Archbishop last winter I have been in contact with the archdiocese about next steps and have been welcomed onto the agenda for August’s upcoming meeting with pastors throughout the archdiocese at the chancery. With that opportunity to explain the subject of my lecture, its resonance and meaning for the archdiocese, and the myriad logistics, I can begin to schedule the adult education opportunity with parishes for the remainder of 2023 and well into 2024.
I look forward to seeing you again in early August.
Sincerely, Brendan Murphy

While it might look like “Ya’ll,” (our popular southern term), “Yalla” is the word used in Israel to mean “Let’s go!” Yalla is also the name of a new Temple Emanu-El Initiative.
Yalla will stand for: Youth and Loving Adults.
Yalla events bring families and their young children together to strengthen friendships and create new ones.

Over the last 10 days, I’ve been living vicariously in Israel. Rabbi Spike, along with parent-chaperone Stacy Bedsole, and 27 teens from our Confirmation class, were in Israel for the experience of a lifetime. This was the inaugural journey of the Schiffer Family Teen Israel Trip—a unique opportunity for Temple Emanu-El teens to deepen their friendships and their connection to their Jewish identity with a highly subsidized trip to the holy land. As your rabbis, we operate under the assumption that Temple Emanu-El’s involvement with Israel and Zionism is a given, but it’s worthwhile to remind ourselves why we care so deeply about Israel and traveling to it.

From Camp to Israel and Everywhere in Between While the synagogue may “slow down” over the summer as your rabbis are busy writing programs, education classes, and sermons, we’re taking some time to recharge, study, and vision too.
Meanwhile, another reason we switch to a new pace is that many of our congregants are enjoying their own summer speed of taking day trips or vacations, sending kids to summer camps (day, overnight, Jewish, sport, art, music, etc.). Some are working (full-time, part-time, as needed, in the home, outside of the home). Others are retired and enjoying the warm weather.
One thing we know that still happens all summer long: Judaism! Judaism in the synagogue is alive and well with the casual vibes of our summer services and Torah studies. Your rabbis are here to elevate your spirit all summer.

Parashat Naso is a favorite of mine. The parasha includes the Priestly Blessing, the words we use every Shabbat to bless children:
May God bless you and keep you safe.
May God’s light shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May God turn towards you and grant you peace.
We take every occasion to use this blessing because it encompasses all our most fundamental wishes and prayers: safety, kindness, and peace. Whenever I sit down with a bar or bat mitzvah student, I tend to focus on this section of the parasha over others.
