Tonight, we celebrate the ‘giving of Torah’ with the holiday of Shavuot!
Theologically, this evening is considered a ‘thin’ place in time, where the barriers between the Divine and the earthly realm are most porous.
Our Kabbalists believed that we could most easily connect to God through active study of Jewish religious texts on Shavuot.
Study, in Judaism, is considered spiritually on par with prayer, and on Shavuot the tradition (from the Zohar) is to joyously engage with one another all through the night.

This past Tuesday, dozens of rabbis from around Atlanta gathered at Molly B’s inside Mercedes Benz Stadium (MBS) to begin a day-long retreat sponsored by the Atlanta Rabbinical Association. The most impactful time at MBS was when Rabbi Spike, Rabbi Rachael, and I heard from Dietmar Exler, the COO of Arthur M. Blank Sports and Entertainment, about what running a massive operation like MBS entails.
We learned that MBS is the highest-rank stadium by any metric in the country. When Dietmar went into the details of how that happens, the clear lesson was to treat every person in the stadium, guests and employees, with the highest quality of service.

Hey, I know you! When I was living in Jerusalem, there was a retired rabbi who used to host rabbinical students in their home who were alumni of the AEPi fraternity. As the girlfriend of an AEPi alum I was invited to join in the Shabbat dinner. When we arrived to the apartment we were greeted with a big smile from a gregarious man and his wife.
As we waited for others to arrive I was looking around at the beautiful art and of course the pictures of kids and grandkids that sprinkled the apartment. Pretty soon into my exploration I picked a photo up and showed it to the rabbi.

May the 4th Be with You — Happy Jewish American Heritage Month May is Jewish American heritage month. Even though Jews represent just 2% of the American population, we have had an outsized impact on our country. By all accounts, we are in a golden age of Jewish life in America. Even as we are mindful of the rising antisemitism in our country, a Jew born today in America has a better chance to find meaning, purpose, and success here than at any time, anywhere on earth, except, of course, for the modern state of Israel.

Last Saturday and this Friday night, our families with children in grades 4–6 came together for our annual B’nei Mitzvah Family Program.
This year’s theme: God Shopping.
We transform the Social Hall into a “Mall.” Tables represent stores, while bright colored paper and stickers fill those tables with “items” for the kids and their parents to “purchase.”
Their shopping list is specific, “buy something that fits…”: Your personal theology, something my parent(s) believe(s) or my child believes…, I’m not sure if…, I hope that…, I think most believe …

After the beginning of Pesach, we count 49 days to the next major Jewish holiday, Shavuot. Ironically, though Shavuot is considered one of the top five biggest biblical holidays (next to Pesach, Sukkot, Rosh HaShanah, and Yom Kippur), most of us scratch our heads when we think about how best to commemorate a holiday based solely around the first wheat harvest in Israel. For thousands of years, our rabbis considered this dilemma too and connected Shavuot with the giving of Torah—a gift as precious and nourishing as the wheat harvested from the field.
The 58th annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration will be held at the Memorial to the Six Million, located at Greenwood Cemetery (1173 Cascade Circle SW, Atlanta, GA 30311).
Sunday, April 16 at 11am
Join us to hear featured speaker Ilse Eichner Reiner. Orphaned at an early age, Ilse Eichner Reiner was sent to the ghetto and concentration camp of Theresienstadt. Of 15,000 child prisoners there, she was one of 100 who survived - only to be deported to Auschwitz. Almost immediately, she was sent to a slave labor camp and then miraculously escaped from a death march. Following her liberation by the Russians, and with great resilience, Ilse built a life enriched by family, culture and joy.
In honor of Yom HaShoah, admission to the Breman Museum’s Holocaust exhibition will be free to the public on April 16, 11 am - 4 pm. For more information, visit thebreman.org or call 678.222.3700.

Was Your Seder Night Different From All Other Nights?
While some of you may be able to relate, perhaps not so many of you have an almost-three-year-old living in your home who has been singing (yelling?) Passover songs since the morning Purim passed.
Unique to her singing this year was the declaration: “No, ima (mommy), you can’t sing with me right now. You’ll sing with me at the Passover seder, but not right now, not until then. Wait until seder.”
Temple Emanu-El is looking for Challah bakers to bake small challahs for a special project we are planning for our congregants.
If you are interested in baking any time over the next several months, please email Stephen Blick.

Beginning this evening, Temple Emanu-El is honored to host our Scholar in Residence, Rabbi Eli Herscher. It has been years since we have had a Scholar in Residence, and it is a very big deal that we are able to do this.
For decades Lee and Arlene Katz sponsored our outside scholars, brought in to teach us at a very high level. This year, Norman and Diane Cohen have taken up the torch, and through their largess, have allowed our entire Temple Emanu-El community to benefit..

There is a Jewish theology that may make us uncomfortable encompassed in a maxim coined by the Lubuvitzer Rebbe, Menachim Mendel Schneerson.
The typical prompt given by Jewish teachers to children is “where is God”? And of course, the child is taught to answer: “God is everywhere.” What the Rebbe did was put an ellipsis on the end of that statement, and with it, a statement that informs our relationship with the Divine.

COVID safety: Masks are optional at Temple Emanu-El events since the CDC’s designation that the Atlanta metro area is in a medium to low risk status. We continue to monitor the risk status levels. When the weather makes it feasible, services and oneg will be outdoors. When in the Sanctuary, there is separate seating during worship services for those who are most comfortable sitting with others who are masked. If you are not feeling well or were diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past 10 days, please stay home and Livestream services rather than attend in person.
Passover Seder is right around the corner (read: less than a month away!). There are many, many ways to conduct a Pesach seder, but I want to make sure you have three ways to elevate your seder this year.
First, bring new people to the seder; it’s a mitzvah!
If you’re hosting, invite a member of the Temple Emanu-El community through our Seder Shidduch service HERE . If you’re a guest at someone’s home this year, ask if you can bring a friend; or, spend one of the two seder nights with a new family. Temple Emanu-El’s Seder Shidduch service HERE is also matching folks who want to be guests at a home.

CAC South
While TE volunteers have been working at CAC South for only a few months, they have accomplished a great deal!
Thanks to the hard work and great spirit of our volunteers, TE has been asked to volunteer on an additional day every month.
In March we will be volunteering at CAC South on: March 8 and March 22 9:00am-1:00pm.
Going forward we will be volunteering the 2nd and 4th Wednesdayof each month.
Here's what you need to know... We will build a new crew of volunteers to support this additional time commitment. Referrals of TE members who would make good volunteers would be greatly appreciated.
Please spread the word!
The new dates have been added to Sign Up Genius for registration. Sign up HERE.

The social hall was packed this past Sunday for our antisemitism program. While it’s important to stand up against antisemitism, we would LOVE to see equal (if not more!) folks join us to celebrate being Jewish!
Our Jewish identity shouldn’t only shine bright when under threat.
Community leaders hold town hall after residents discover antisemitic flyers in neighborhood
Community leaders and lawmakers held a town hall Sunday night in Sandy Springs to discuss combatting hate in the wake of dozens of people discovering antisemitic flyers in their driveways earlier this month.
Senior Rabbi Spike Anderson with Temple Emanu-El in Sandy Springs hosted the town hall. He said doing nothing was not a choice they wanted to make.
“We decided doing nothing was a choice we didn’t want to make,” said Anderson.
