Yes, you read that correctly. Today is the final edition of the Thursday Kesher Quick email. Over the last few months, we’ve realized how many emails we send in a week. It’s a lot. Too many, in fact. Our goal is for congregants to know just how many events and initiatives are happening at Temple Emanu-El, and we’ve heard the feedback that stuffing your email inboxes is not the way. You’ll notice a few significant changes in our marketing and communication beginning Monday, July 15th.

The White Rose Society
The White Rose Society is a grassroots organization dedicated to celebrating and honoring individuals who actively combat anti-Semitism in their communities. The effort pays homage to the courageous resistance group, The White Rose Movement, that was founded in the early 1940s by non-Jewish students at the University of Munich to fight the Nazis. Though these heroic students were executed, their courage continues to inspire future generations to take a moral stand.
The White Rose Society aims to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of non-Jewish individuals in the ongoing fight against anti-Semitic sentiments. In a world where anti-Semitism continues to pose a significant threat to peace and harmony, The White Rose Society emerges as a beacon of hope and recognition for those who stand up against this pervasive form of hatred.
The organization's primary goal is to acknowledge and commend the unwavering commitment of non-Jewish allies who boldly challenge anti-Semitic forces and promote inclusivity and understanding.
The White Rose Society invites individuals and organizations passionate about combating anti-Semitism to join its movement and contribute to the ongoing efforts to build a more just and compassionate society. Please visit the website: thewhiterosesociety.com and nominate worthy individuals.

In 1938, Jewish songwriter Irving Berlin published the unofficial national anthem, God Bless America. The original, drafted in 1918, was cut from the show he was working on. The song’s early lyrics included a line that divided Americans. The text read:
God Bless America, land that I love Stand beside her And guide her To the right with the light from above.
By 1938, he needed a song that would bring Americans together as the war in Europe loomed... Read more here

It’s been nice to be back in the office for the latter half of June, and then in July I’ll conclude my sabbatical in Israel, studying at The Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.
While there, I have the honor of officiating my first wedding in Israel. The groom is Marita’s cousin, who is marrying an amazing woman who is a Jew from Germany who recently made Aliyah. They have already signed marriage paperwork in Europe, so the ceremony in Tel Aviv does not have to include the orthodox rabbanut.
Yesterday, the three of us met over Zoom for the final ‘pre-marriage’ counseling session. As we were settling into the conversation, I asked how they were doing, and how the war in Gaza (and unrest in the north with Hezbollah) was affecting the daily life of regular people…who are in school, going to work, and living their lives nine months after October 7th.

Well… I’m back (for a short while, I’m heading to Jerusalem to study in July) for a sabbatical, and it was everything that I hoped it would be. I’ll share a story (and lesson learned) or two at Shabbat services tomorrow night, in what I hope will be a light and spiritually uplifting service. With all the heaviness that we Jews are experiencing with Israel and antisemitism, we need the respite of Shabbat to feel joy and community through song, stories, and tradition. At least sometimes…

Two months ago, Rabbi Max and I moved to a new neighborhood. On Saturday evening, we attended our first ever HOA party. We quickly learned that these gatherings follow a script. After an exchange of pleasantries, every conversation continued like this:
Household 1: How long have you been in the neighborhood? Where’s the house? Household 2: [Responds and reflects the questions back.]
Household 1: [Explains where their house is located in the neighborhood and then says] Oh how nice, you’re going to love it here. Have any kids?

Yes! The middle child of Jewish holidays, Shavuot, is this Wednesday. Packed between Pesach and the High Holy Days, it is easy to forget about this major Jewish celebration. Over our history, Shavuot has been a holiday to mark the fruit harvest, the wheat harvest, and the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. In the last 500 years, most communities that celebrate Shavuot hold all-night study-a-thons and feast on dairy treats.

On May 26th, the IDF used precision munitions to kill two senior Hamas militants. Unfortunately, Gazan civilians also died as a result of a secondary explosion in a Hamas munitions depot.
Yet again, as always, the world news immediately reported a number of 25+, 35+, or 45+ deaths as data given by the Hamas-run Health Ministry. And soon, the news agencies will walk back the source of the fire that caused the deaths.

Two holidays, Memorial Day and Lag b ’Omer, are approaching this weekend. While you may be more familiar with one, it's interesting to note that our National Day of Remembrance and Lag b ‘Omer share significant commonalities.
On the Jewish calendar, the period between Pesach and Shavuot is called the Omer. We count each night between the two holidays for a total of forty-nine days. The Torah's explanation for these days is sparse, but rabbinic literature provides some context. The forty-nine days are solemn. In some Jewish communities, marriages aren’t held during this time, music is not played in public, and no one gets a haircut. However, the 33rd day of the Omer is a break in the dour mood.

In the last week, I can’t count how many times I’ve said the phrase, “use your words.” Spoiler alert, it’s a lot. I hear it’s a byproduct of raising kids. However, I also know that I must model what that phrase means.
Rather than cry about everything that doesn’t go their way, we ask kids to use their words to express what they feel.
As adults, we know words matter. We use our words to speak out for change, to voice our concerns, and express our hopes for the future. We don’t always have the right words.

This morning, I woke up and did something I don’t normally do. I watched the news.
I’m more of a morning news “reader” than I am a news “watcher.”
The images of various college campuses moved me to want to watch and to listen to what was happening. The environment was loud. The noises sounded like a war zone.

I don’t worry about antisemitism from white nationalists, skinheads, or neo-Nazis. I can identify that form of antisemitism a mile away. Those kinds of people who hate Jews aren’t shy to admit their beliefs. What worries me, what keeps me up at night, are the folks who cloak their antisemitism under the garb of social justice. For my entire life, social justice was on the banner of my Jewish identity. I grew up on a steady diet of helping the hungry, the poor, and the orphans, all as a manifestation of my Jewish identity. I marched for reproductive rights, for LGBTQ causes, and against racism—and I will continue to do so. What’s changed is that many of the same folks who marched alongside me now see my Zionist beliefs as the problem.

Did you know that for several years Temple Emanu-El has had a small, but very active Green Team working to limit Temple Emanu-El’s climate impact and to provide environmental education and inspiration to our community? We are charter members of Adamah, the largest Jewish environmental organization in North America. Adamah’s mission is to cultivate vibrant Jewish life in deep connection with the earth.
We are looking for new members to help us achieve our goals for this year and beyond. If you are interested in joining us, please send an email to Robert Wittenstein to receive an invite to our next Zoom meeting on May 14th at 3:30pm.
Help us move Temple Emanu-El forward in our efforts to create culture change and climate action.

How can I celebrate freedom while 134 Jews are not free?
Passover (Pesach) celebrates our ancestors’ freedom from slavery. How can we celebrate being free while 130+ Jews are held hostage in Gaza? I’ve received this question in various forms over the last few days. This year is different from all other years because, this year, we commemorate Pesach with the knowledge that we are not all free. Just as Pharaoh sought the annihilation of our people, so too do evil rulers seek our demise today. However, like our ancestors, we will prevail over our enemies. We will celebrate together again in full joy. Read more here

TEMPLE EMANU-EL'S ANNUAL FUNDRAISER: SPRING FORWARD
We open the door for Elijah too late in our Passover Seder. According to the Haggadah, we invite the Prophet Elijah into our homes after the meal is over. This is too late! By the end of the seder meal, we’ve told the story of our exodus from Egypt, and all Elijah gets to enjoy is his cup of wine. The Prophet Elijah represents all who have been cast out, and we open the doors of our homes as a symbol that we would welcome anyone. The problem is that the food has been cleared, and the story is nearly over when we welcome newcomers inside.

TEMPLE EMANU-EL'S ANNUAL FUNDRAISER: SPRING FORWARD
Today is day 167 of the war against Hamas. I’ve heard many people ask the question: How do we celebrate ______ when there are still hostages…when there are children and mothers starving in Gaza.
If you’ve had these thoughts, know that you’re not alone. Jews all over the world are holding these concerns.
However, we are on the edge of beginning one of the biggest celebrations of the year: Purim. During Purim, we are commanded to be celebratory, to feast, and to be merry.

What Can’t Be a Grogger? Everything can be a grogger if you believe hard enough. Zohara’s Jewish education at The MJCCA Schiff School and the Diamond Family Religious School taught me this lesson. Perhaps the first lesson we learn for the holiday of Purim is how to properly “boo” the bad guy, Haman. We could shout, whoop, and holler, but why expend all that energy when you can put some coins in a tin can and shake it all around the house? Like the shofar of the High Holy Days, the grogger wakes us up from the slumber of winter.

During the month of Adar, we are supposed to increase our joy. The Hebrew year, 5784, is a leap year, which means we have another month of Adar (Adar bet) to find extra joy.
While the ongoing hostage crisis and war continue in Gaza, the thought of increasing joy is complicated. How can we be joyful when our brothers and sisters are still in captivity? How can we be joyful while innocent mothers and children are hungry in Gaza?
And yet, we, the Jewish people - despite all of our persecution and attacks on our community throughout the centuries - continue to live Jewishly because it is at the core of our resistance.

There are two mitzvot pertaining to the Shabbat meal. One is oneg, the mitzvah to delight in Shabbat, as it is written: “Call Shabbat ‘delight’ (oneg)” (Isaiah 58:13). Oneg is fulfilled primarily through the meals, but snacks and a Shabbat nap are parts of it as well." (Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 7:2:2) Providing the Oneg is performing a Mitzvah for our community.
Hosting an Oneg is not only a Mitzvah, but it can also be a way to celebrate a family event and share the good news with the congregation.

Like many of you, I bought an Israeli-styled dog tag to show my support for Israel. On one side is the emblem of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) with the words “Am Yisrael Chai,” Long live the people of Israel. On the other side is the emblem of the Nova music festival and the phrase, “We will dance again.” For those unfamiliar, the Nova Music Festival was a dance party at Kibbutz Re’im in the desert for young Israelis. The now famous phrase, “We will dance again,” comes from the released hostage Mia Schem, who was captured at the Nova Festival by Hamas.

There is a powerful message that comes to us through almost every aspect of our Judaism that we, the Jewish people, are charged to help change the world for the better…in partnership with God . This charge has resonated, and inspired, Jews through hundreds of generations.
It is empowering to believe that we are an important part of something essential to the world.

About a year ago, we announced to the congregation that I would be heading out on a four-month sabbatical starting March of 2024. That time is fast approaching.
After 16 years in the rabbinate, nine of which I have served at Temple Emanu-El as Senior rabbi, I am so very grateful to have been granted this gift of time.
In these upcoming months, I plan to engage in serious Jewish study (some of which will be in Israel), explore mission-based service work, and perhaps write the book that I’ve been thinking about for a decade. No doubt, these activities will benefit my own spiritual life, and will certainly help to nourish the soul of Temple Emanu-El for years to come.

This weekend begins the Jewish month of Adar, a time of unparalleled joy in the Jewish year. In a few weeks, we will celebrate Purim, and not long afterward, we will mark our exodus from Egypt with the holiday of Pesach. Amid war, sadness, and despair, commemorating joyful holidays may seem at odds with the ethos of the last four months. However, this is far from the first time we have celebrated simchas while also holding sorrow. Disasters mar Jewish history, but throughout our generations, we have combined joy and “oy.” Through the writings of our sages, we have a path to reconcile these two opposite emotions.

Koleinu Shabbat – Take Action, Raise Our Voices
Last Friday night, I was privileged to attend the Koleinu Shabbat Service - Celebrating Jewish Inclusion Awareness. It was an incredibly moving service attended by a large crowd. Here are some highlights.
This Thursday we begin to deliver Backpack Buddy meals to an additional 100 students who attend Indian Creek Elementary School. It is a very unique and diverse school. The students come from more than 40 countries around the world, bringing with them 45 different languages and dialects along with their rich cultures. The school welcomes almost 900 students daily, making it one of the largest elementary schools in DeKalb County.
Congratulations, Garden Isaiah!
Garden Isaiah has received a $1,500 grant from the Food Well Alliance for 2024! The grant will be used for compost, plantings, fertilizer and tools. We will strive to beat last year’s harvest of 1,192 pounds donated to the Community Assistance Center food bank. Special thanks to Ellen Etheridge for completing the grant request and getting it submitted to the Food Well Alliance.

A Great Use of Your Time to Fight Antisemitism in Georgia
Dear Temple Emanu-El,
The Jews of Georgia had a big ‘win’ this week!
For those of you who were awake this past Yom Kippur for the sermon, we talked about the importance of passing HB30, known as the ‘antisemitism bill’ through the Georgia State Legislature.
The previous two years we were unsuccessful in this effort, but this past Thursday, HB30 passed overwhelmingly in the Georgia State House and Senate.
Many Jewish organizations have put significant time and energy into lobbying elected officials, meeting with them, and explaining how HB30 will increase our (sense of) protection as Antisemitism continues to dramatically rise. (An important note, out of all the Georgia State legislators, only one is Jewish (Esther Panitch, House District 51).
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) really quarterbacked this effort, and I am VERY PROUD to say that Temple Emanu-El did our part.
Almost 400 of you were at our Legislative Shabbat dinner & service on January 12th, where we hosted more than 50 elected officials. Some of you were ‘buddied’ up for the evening, to host our guests, and talk about what it was like to be Jewish in America today, and the importance of passing HB30.
Many of our congregants took the day last Thursday to be at the state capital to fill the gallery with our voices as the votes were cast.
Yesterday was a historic day as Governor Kemp signed HB30 into law.
This is a big deal.
Now, I would ask one more thing of you. We need to follow up, and we need to do it thoroughly.
The AJC has provided us with the language, and the links, to reach out to the Georgia legislators who voted for HB30, and the ones who voted against HB30.
I cannot stress enough how important it is that we get in touch with them in significant numbers.
If you want to personally make a difference against antisemitism in Georgia, this is an excellent use of your time.
For our allies on HB30, they need to know that we see and appreciate them with words of gratitude and recognition. Trust me, they are hearing from other constituents who are unhappy with their vote.
For those few who voted against HB30, they also need to hear from us. We need to be respectful, but firm that we are very disappointed. We are not looking to burn bridges, but we need to let them know that we are paying attention.
Additionally, we need to thank Governor Brian Kemp and Lt. Governor Burt Jones for their support of HB30.
Chazak Chazak V’NitChazak- Be Strong, be strong, and through one another may we be strengthened.
Shabbat shalom Rabbi Spike
February is Jewish Disabilities month...

Let’s be honest, having children can be both the most rewarding and the most challenging experience of our lives. Adding the additional complexity of having a child with Special Needs completely changes the way you look at raising a child and life itself. Our family is blessed to have three amazing boys, Spencer 13 and Noah and Parker who are 11-year-old twins. Parker has Down Syndrome which is also called Trisomy 21 meaning he has an extra chromosome on the 21st pair.
Liam Denneen is a 13 year old who has been a very active member of Temple Emanu-El since he was an 18 month old Schiff pre-schooler. Shortly before his third birthday, Liam was diagnosed with a rare disease called Hunter Syndrome (MPS II). Hunter Syndrome is a progressively degenerative disease that impacts every cell in the body, leading to various physical and cognitive disabilities and a relatively short lifespan.

Voices of the Future
“I have a voice. My voice is powerful. My voice can change the world.”
These words by Elana Arian are sung over and over by the teens attending the L’Taken Social Justice Seminar as they move through this very special weekend. L’Taken, in partnership with the Religious Action Center and the Union for Reform Judaism, is designed to both expose high school students to a variety of public policy issues and explore the Jewish values that inform the Reform Movement’s advocacy around these issues.

Today is the 104th day of October 7th, a day we will re-live until every hostage is home. However, today is more difficult than most days since the Black Shabbat. Today is Kfir Bibas’s birthday. A nine-month-old baby who was taken hostage marks one year of life, a quarter of which has been in captivity. A day meant for unbridled joy is as dark as the deepest night of winter. All I can think of is the mantra of these 104 days, “Bring Them Home.” I pray these words each day I utter “Acheinu Kol Beit Yisrael, Our Brothers and Sisters, All the House of Israel.”
This past Friday night was our Legislative & MLK Shabbat dinner & service. We had more than 300 people seated for dinner, including 50 elected officials. Each elected official had a TE “buddy” who was tasked to make them feel welcome, introduce them around, convey what it is like to be a Jew in America right now and to advocate for HB30 “the antisemitism bill” in the GA State legislature. It was important to us for our guests to take part in a positive, Jewish ritual experience. We started the evening with our traditional blessings, heard from a few legislative leaders, and then had Shabbat dinner together.
Jewish Community Advocacy Day will take place next Thursday, January 25. The primary programming will take place 12-3 p.m., but we'll also need people there as early as 9 a.m. Those interested in attending should RSVP:www.ajc.org/atlanta/advocacyday2024
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Opportunity for members of the Jewish community to show support for H.B.30 by being in the Senate gallery.
12:00-1:00 p.m. – Opportunity for the community to gather and display the large number of people supporting H.B.30. Some food available.
1:00 p.m. – Press Conference
Around 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. – After the press conference, depending on the status of the bill, we will work to have meetings with senators and representatives.
Additionally, people can easily email their State Senator by using the action alert at www.ajc.org/atlanta/hb30action . If you would like to make phone calls, please email Sam Halpern at halperns@ajc.org for names and phone numbers.

Bring them home now! More than two months into this war and, at the time of this writing, there are still 130+ hostages being held in Gaza. We will not forget about the sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers who are enduring unimaginable conditions.
We created these bracelets as a constant reminder of two important messages we carry with us these days. First, that the people of Israel will live, Am Yisrael Chai. Second, that our family has been taken from us and we will not forget them.
We hope you’ll wear these bracelets until every hostages returns home.
We will not be silent. We will not forget.
Am Yisrael Chai

A Chavurah is a group of around 6-12 individuals, couples, and/or families who have some common interests. It is a great opportunity to develop closer friendships with a smaller group of TE members.
Click here for more information and fill out a short questionnaire to help the Chavurah Committee place you with a group. The committee will help get you started and will provide any assistance that you need to make your Chavurah successful!

This past Saturday night, we experienced something beautiful.
For a few years now, we have had what I call an ‘interfaith triangle’ between Temple Emanu-El, the Presbyterians at St. Luke’s, and the Muslims from the Istanbul Cultural Center.
Each year, each of us hosts the other two for a special occasion. This past Sukkot, we had 90 people (about a 1/3rd from each group) at Temple Emanu-El to dine in our sukkah, experience our Sukkot customs, have conversation and fellowship, and then informally ‘tour’ our sanctuary. My heart soared to see our congregants explaining the Jewish symbols and taking out our Torahs to show our friends our most sacred books.
Rabbi Spike & Marita Anderson held a conversation over Zoom with Temple Emanu-El congregants about their recent Israel volunteer mission. If you missed it, and are interested, click the button.
If you are sending your synagogue payments to PO Box 418 Montvale, New Jersey 07645 please update the address on your payments to go to the Temple Emanu-El Office at 1580 Spalding Drive, Atlanta, GA 30350

You can pick up one of these bracelets after Shabbat services.

Sponsor an Oneg!
Commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, awards, graduations, B’nai Mitzvah and other happy occasions. Sponsor an Oneg today!
Sisterhood Tree of Life
Her ways are pleasant and all her paths, peaceful. She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and whoever holds on to her is happy. Proverbs 3:17–18 Honor a loved one or a special occasion by purchasing a leaf on our Tree of Life

Remember A Loved One
I will give them, in My House And within My walls, A monument and a name Better than sons or daughters. I will give them an everlasting name That shall not perish. (Isaiah 56:5)
We are commanded not merely to grieve but also to remember and to observe.
Temple Emanu-El’s Yahrzeit plaques both perpetuate the cherished memory of the loved ones we have lost and create a permanent family legacy.
Memorializing our loved ones in this way fulfills the commandment to give tzedakah in their honor.

It’s good to be back! After time away on maternity leave to bond with our new baby, Ozzie, I’m back in the office full-time and excited to reconnect with everyone — I’ve missed you!
Many thanks to all those who reached out with words of congratulations, gifts, and food. Temple Emanu-El is a special community, and Max, Zohara, Ozzie, and I have felt all of the love. Thank You.
Invitation to Hear About The Anderson Israel Mission
Dear Temple Emanu-El,
Marita & I just returned from our 10-day volunteer mission trip to Israel. Some of our experiences we have shared on Facebook (personal, and TE page), and I suspect that we will share additional snippets and vignettes in sermons and TE gatherings over the next few weeks. Truth be told, this experience is one of the most profound we have ever had, and I suspect it will influence who we are as people for the rest of our lives.
We want to invite you to spend an hour with us over Zoom this Sunday night, 8:00pm.

In the final Torah portion of the Book of Genesis, Jacob (aka Israel) delivers an ethical will to his children. Jacob’s first request was to be returned to his homeland, the Land of Israel when his descendants left Egypt. This isn’t the first nor the last instance of our people’s connection to the land that God promised Abraham. When we describe the Jewish connection to the modern-day State of Israel, we look back 3000 years to a story like Jacob’s. In life and death, our people turn toward Israel.
